Instagram, Facebook, and Whatsapp suffering the worst outage since 2008

Updated: 4:07pm October 4th, 2021

At around 1 pm ET, users reported Facebook displaying a server error code and Instagram and WhatsApp not loading across the globe midday Monday.

All of the platforms reported to Twitter to give a statement addressing the error claims:

Users all across social media have been in up roar about the sites being simultaneously down and now getting enough communication on the issue from Facebook.

As of right now there have been reports from multiple security experts stating that the issues could have arose from the Domain Name System (DNS) . To further explain that I saw an example that described this potential issue to be similar to losing the names to phone numbers in an address book.

Just now, I found Cloudflare vice-president Dane Knecht tweets discussing what is occuring on the servers and causing issues. Here are some of his tweets from the past 24 hours:

This could be a significant issue due to the amount of users attempting to re-login to addresses that are now unrecognized and trying to be reloaded by data specialists.

I am currently seeing an expectation of revival in the next 24 hours, but expect major bug issues and glitches as they revive and reverse their errors.

Which if that is the case, explains why all of the platforms have been down for some time now across the globe.

This outage also comes directly after the premier of the 60 Minutes episode from Facebook whistleblower, Frances Haugen, who discussed the conflicts of public interest she saw working as a Facebook product developer.

Her conversation on 60 Minutes has definitely stirred up numerous conversations around motive and intent behind social media engagement and virality concepts. There are discussions going around on the media about the potential toxicity social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram can have due to the promotion of hateful, violent, and controversial content.

Haugen not only discusses some important experiences she has had working for the company, but she has has research filing from her time working there that she kept and eludes to support her claims against the immoral intentions of Facebook algorithm systems and promotions.

Could this outage be a direct result of this whistleblower conversation?

It could be, or it could be just another error similar to that of the error Facebook went through in 2008 where servers were down for an hour. In this case, servers have been down for some over 3+ hours at this current moment.

There are numerous users threatening lawsuits due to the longevity of the outage and lack of communication from Facebook on what the status of return will be.

Facebook is going to have to return with some serious explaining for its audience members due to the absolute uproar on social media from the widespread outage.

There will definitely be more news on this coming our as the hours tick on.

As people begin to realize the dominance that Facebook had over the globe with Instagram and WhatsApp under its belt, there is a clear distrust now in the information Facebook promotes and the information they offer to its users.

Facebook’s stock is also taking a major hit currently being down, and Mark Zuckerberg has just been reported by Bloomberg Wealth to have lost $7 billion in net worth in the past few hours of the outage. Making Zuckerberg now number 5 on the words richest people list below Bill Gates.

Moving forward many users have reported spending less time on Facebook, and this outage being a wake up call for the amount of time spent on the platform. Currently, #DeleteFacebook is trending.

We shall see what is to come from this historic social media event.

I’m in your corner.
